Ghosts………..Fantasmas

Ghosts………..Fantasmas

As a child I grew up watching Caspar The Friendly Ghost on TV. I may even have read a comic book or two. And I believe that I may have dressed up as a ghost one year on Halloween. But believe in them? That they haunt people? That they are evil?

While I thoroughly enjoyed the movie E.T. as well as the TV program Alf, this wasn’t real life. The characters were created to entice audiences to the cinema or to view TV and increase ratings. And then there was I See People Who Are Dead from The Sixth Sense. Again, an attempt to lure people to the cinema.

Years ago on Day of the Dead I went with a friend to a cemetery in Guadalajara at night. My students were skeptical. “Teacher, be careful. It is dangerous. The ghosts are not nice.” They were serious. They were actually frightened and feared for my safety. However, my friend and I left the cemetery that night unscathed. We actually laughed at the eerie sounds such as creaking doors and clanking chains. We were amused by the spectacle of ghosts flitting about in the cemetery and disappearing behind brick walls. Amazing what special effects can do!

Last winter, Emiliano and his friends created a podcast for his middle school class. The subject—fantasmas(ghosts). He informed me that there was a ghost that haunted his school. At night the building was locked up tight. In the morning, often furniture was moved, windows were opened and various objects strewn about. Interesting.

Here in Mexico it is very common that people believe in ghosts. I’ve lived in several places in Mexico and have heard that phrase often. And I heard it once again at Conversation Club last week. This group is comprised of adults and last week all present were in their 50s. One of them remarked that two ghosts haunted the house he lived in. Another stated that he had seen strange things in the sky at night and had taken photos of them. However not all of these objects were visible in the photos.

Given my background in psychology, one of the members asked me point blank if I believe in ghosts and the supernatural. It’s true that I have read articles and watched documentaries. But I am not convinced. I have not had any type of personal experience, unless you count the night at the cemetery in Guadalajara. And I did not feel any drastic change in temperature, or any sudden breeze in the air, as others have reported. I have never seen a flying saucer in the sky nor seen an extraterrestrial creature.

But is it time to delve into this and do more research? Hmmmmm.

Laughter is the best medicine. This quote actually has its roots in the Bible. “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.” Proverbs 17:22, King James Version.

Laughing can affect our mental health as it improves mood. Laughing lowers the stress hormones in the body. Remarkably, children laugh fifteen times as much as adults do every single day.

As adults, how do we make ourselves laugh more? Look for opportunities to laugh. Engage in enjoyable activities. Interact more with children.

This was my laughter therapy yesterday. It began with Saturday morning cartoons. Yes, I’m in my seventies and I still watch those. My favorite is Beep Beep The Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote. I also enjoy the antics of Sylvester and Tweety, Tom and Jerry, Woody The Woodpecker and so many more cartoon characters.

Then it was off to the cinema to see Freakier Friday where we laughed even more.

Next I capped the day off with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. I recall seeing this movie back in the 80s. I also remember watching it with my kids. And decades later it still makes me laugh.

I haven’t watched any cartoons or funny movies today, but enjoyable activities is at the top of my list. Church this morning and brunch with a friend after. Also looking forward to going to a concert tonight.

What has made you laugh this weekend?

WordPress Prompt Of The Day

WordPress Prompt Of The Day

I don’t usually do the prompt that WordPress puts up daily. But today I decided to do it. The prompt is “What’s your favorite cartoon?”

I have always loved cartoons. There’s nothing better than laughter to get your serotonin levels boosted. As children we smiled and laughed way more than we do as adults. Of course back then we were carefree with few responsibilities. However, smiling and laughing are important. And yes, I still do watch cartoons quite regularly.

My favorite cartoon has always been Beep Beep The Roadrunner, ever since I was a child. The antics of Beep Beep and Wile E Coyote amuse me to no end. Apparently this cartoon debuted back in 1949 before I was born. I love watching boulders crush Wile E and seeing him blasted by dynamite. He’s always trying to catch Beep Beep, but that roadrunner constantly outsmarts him.

I do watch other cartoons from Disney such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. The other day I was surfing the net and found vintage cartoons of Mighty Mouse. That brought back memories of Friday afternoons after school when my cousins and I would munch on challah and watch this cartoon series. I also watch The Muppets, and this brings back memories of when my son was young and this was one of his favorite shows.

I like to watch cartoons at night after I’ve put away my writing for the night. It’s a great way to relax before heading for dreamland, especially when it’s far too late to begin watching a two hour movie.

I sometimes watch cartoons on TV in Spanish. Two of my favorites here are Peppa the Pig and Dora the Explorer.

So if you’re looking for some great stress relief, I highly recommend Beep Beep and Wile E. This characters are sure to give you a chuckle.
