Sunday April 13, 2025

Today is Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week, or Semana Santa as we call it here in Mexico. It actually overlaps this year with the Jewish Passover which began last night. Whatever you are celebrating, I hope it is a blessed time spent with family and friends.

Religion has been on my mind these days. I’ve been reading a lot of historical fiction. Kristin Hannah has become one of my favorite authors. I’ve also read books by Kristin Harmel and Georgia Hunter. And I still have several more on my “to read” list. As an aspiring writer of fiction, reading the works of other authors is an important tool for me.

I belong to a book club back in Washington. Thanks to North Central Washington Libraries, I’ve been able to read books on Libby and Hoopla and keep up with the group. Actually, I more listen to them than read them. While I much prefer to hold a book in my hands, I find myself listening to audiobooks. I have more than enough screen time with my writing.

I first became interested in reading as a young child. It began with Golden Books and then moved on to Dick, Jane and Sally books I read at school. My Aunt Anne lived in Regina but she was the one who introduced me to Dr. Suess and The Cat In The Hat. She also encouraged me to read other books, such as Charlotte’s Web and Winnie The Pooh. And when I was older she recommended the series of Agatha Christie books. I became enthralled with Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. Decades later when my aunt was in a personal care home struggling with Alzheimer’s, I visited her regularly. Remarkably, our conversation often shifted to books.

Rosamunde Pilcher is another of my favorite authors. I first read The Shell Seekers when I was in Florida visiting my mother. I was recuperating from surgery and reading was a most welcome activity. In the years after that I went on to read all of Pilcher’s books.

When my children were young, I used to take them to programs at the libraries in Winnipeg where I encouraged them to experience the joys of reading. It is amazing to immerse yourself in the many different worlds of other people and to share in their adventures. And I am pleased that my daughter has carried on this tradition with my granddaughter.

What books are on your nightstand?

Boundaries and Books

Boundaries and Books

Last night was a very stimulating conversation about boundaries in one of my Zoom groups. How do we define boundaries? How do we create boundaries? How do we enforce boundaries? Professional boundaries. Personal boundaries. Very interesting. We’re all getting together in person this weekend to delve into this topic even more.

The prompt on WordPress yesterday was “What book could you read over and over again?” Wow! Only one? I can think of a lot more than one. Obviously my Bible would be one. But there are some others that stand out.

Rosamunde Pilcher is one of my favorite authors. I adore all her books but the one that I love the most is The Shell Seekers. I’ve read it several times and will probably read it again this summer.

Brace yourselves. I also read Danielle Steele although lately I’ve been finding her books to be a tad too predictable, almost to the point where the plots really don’t vary from book to book and you can almost interchange character’s names.

John Grisham is another of my favorite authors. So is Nicholas Sparks. I even enjoy reading Charles Dickens from time to time.

One of the greatest books ever was written by Robert Munsch and I’m sure you can guess which book I’m referring to. Love You Forever. I have tearful memories of reading this one to my kids when they were younger. I even gave them each a copy when they were adults.

Boundary setting time. It’s getting late and I still want to get some editing done in my WIP. So that’s it for today’s post.

Happy Humpday!

Happy July Fourth

Happy July Fourth

It’s Thursday July 4th, Independence Day here in the USA.

It was nice to sleep in and not rush off to teach a fitness class this morning. Rather than brave the crowds at Kinderfest this year, I have chosen to spend a leisurely day reading instead.

I’m currently reading The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher. This is one of my favorite books and I have read it numerous times.

I recall the first time I read it. Recovering from surgery, I had gone to visit my mother in Port Charlotte, Florida. She was determined that I rest and gave me this several hundred page book to read in the hope that I would lounge around reading and relax. Her strategy worked. I loved the book and couldn’t put it down.

Over the years I read the rest of the books Rosamunde Pilcher had written. I also collected them all. But sadly I no longer have them. They, along with the rest of my library, simply did not fit into the two suitcases that are the extent of my possessions today.

Now that I have this blog post up, I shall return to my reading until it’s time to go over to my friend’s home for dinner.

Happy Fourth!
