It’s Smokey Here

It’s Smokey Here

Washington state is on fire. Oregon is on fire. California is on fire. British Columbia is on fire. The smoke was really bad in Wenatchee this week. Here in Dryden the smoke has started to blow away.

It’s summer and we all want to be outdoors. But when the smoke is so bad we’re back to hibernating indoors. And we find other things to do.

It’s hard to believe that my post earlier in the week had pics of clear skies with no smoke in Lake Chelan. The smoke rolled in the day after.

Fitness classes I teach are indoors. However the windows were closed as there was no fresh air to ventilate the room.

Movies. Yes it’s been a good time to catch up on Netflix. And I’ve also been watching season two of The Chosen.

Going out for lunch with friends in air-conditioned restaurants. No outdoor patios in the past few days.

We saw a production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It at Riverside Playhouse in Wenatchee. Excellent show featuring very talented kids and teens.

I’ve been reading quite a bit as well. Always looking for new authors and have found some great books this summer.

And then there’s researching future travel plans………

On Monday Joyce and I went out to Lake Chelan for the day. Located about 30 miles out of Wenatchee, we enjoyed a scenic drive with beautiful views of the river and the mountains.

I’ve taken numerous photos of the town in the past, so I didn’t take many on this trip. I really love the grounds of this quaint church with these colorful flowers.

These guys always amuse me.

The water is what I find so calming and peaceful.

On past trips I’ve been out on a boat, basked on the beach and taken a ferry out to Stehekin. I also prefer the quieter weekdays as opposed to the weekends crowded with tourist traffic, although quite a few people were out on the water on Monday.

Lake Chelan In Winter

The last time I was in Lake Chelan was over a year ago. Ann and I had taken the ferry from there to Stehekin. Her son-in-law had also taken us for a boat ride out on the lake one day. While the lake has not frozen over, I was quite content to just gaze out at the water at this time of the year.

Winterfest began on Friday and ended on Monday, the day I was there. As I strolled through the downtown area, I enjoyed viewing the ice sculptures. With the unusually warm temperatures and the sunshine, the ice was actually beginning to melt.

I was also pleasantly surprised that there was no snow on the ground, although we had passed by snow along the highway on the way up. I guess Leavenworth has enough snow for all of us this year.

It was nice to venture out on a day trip again. I hope that the weather cooperates as I’m already contemplating another day trip, this time to Waterville.

It’s a rainy evening and I’m quite content to stay in and sort through photos. This also means that I have the time to write a blog post. Looking out the window, it’s hard to believe that last Friday it was warm and sunny.

Last Friday I went out to Lake Chelan. It was nice to get away for the day. Leavenworth was already crowded with tourists coming in for Autumn Leaf Festival. Chelan is quieter at this time of year as most of the summer visitors have departed.

My first stop was the museum. It’s quite a bit smaller than the Waterville Museum but it does have some interesting displays. Here are a few.

I enjoyed a delicious lunch at B C McDonalds and then walked down the street to the church.

I walked through the courtyard and down to the water. It was serene and peaceful. I strolled along the walkway for a while and then sat down on a bench to admire the view.

I plan to return to Lake Chelan next summer and take the cruise up to Stehekin as time has run out on me this year. Something to look forward to…………

And August Begins

And August Begins

It’s August already? What happened to July? Since I returned from Springdale, the days have been a blur of activity. Aside from the usual exercise classes, bridge games and lunches with friends at the senior center, there have been other things on the agenda.

Along with my friend Becky, we volunteered one night at the concession stand for Leavenworth Summer Theater’s production of The Sound of Music. The venue is atop a hill, albeit a considerable amount of smokey haze somewhat obscured the spectacular view of the mountains. The audience numbered approximately 500 people, and it was well worth the climb uphill to reach their seats. In the opening scene, Maria sauntered through the woods singing as she made her entrance onstage. What an ideal setting for this musical!

The Rotary Club held a barbecue at a park in Wenatchee. Clubs from Leavenworth, Cashmere and Wenatchee were represented. The park had a swimming pool, a playground and tennis courts.  About 100 people attended this event.

Last Friday I braved the smokey skies and headed for Lake Chelan. I was delighted with the museum and enjoyed viewing the variety of items on displayed. I sauntered through the churchyard and headed down to the water, but it was far too smokey to stay very long. I then had a lovely lunch at BC McDonalds before returning to Leavenworth.

Guess what some of us did last Saturday morning at 8 am? Nope, we didn’t sleep in. We attended a four hour CPR/First Aid class held at Leavenworth Church of the Nazarene. And we now have a two year certification by the American Red Cross. I hope we never have to use these skills but it’s good to have reviewed basic first aid, CPR and the use of AEDs. It’s also interesting to note how the laws vary from state to state, quite different from the classes I took back in Canada where lawsuits were only lightly mentioned.

Earlier in the week on the internet I obtained my Washington food handlers certification. I want to volunteer in the kitchen at the Senior Center where this course is required. And this week I began a new course online entitled Rethinking Ageing offered by The University of Melbourne. I also had my home group online from Church of the Rock in Winnipeg.

Earlier this week I also went out to Plain with my friends Dee and Karen. The first stop was Plain Hardware.

Karen then gave us a spectacular tour of Grunewald Guild. She used to live here and we spent hours touring the buildings and the grounds. Once again, I took far too many photos, but here is a sampling.

We then took a short drive through Lake Wenatchee State Park, where despite the smokey haze, surprisingly quite a few people were swimming and boating.

I am heading to the golf course shortly to have lunch with Charlene. Wild Huckleberry is one of my favorite restaurants in Leavenworth. Not only is the food amazing, but the view is  also spectacular. Perhaps the deer will be out today. A lovely start to the weekend!

On the weekend we took a drive out to Lake Chelan. As usual, the scenery along the way was magnificent. The mountains, rivers and orchards are spectacular in the state of Washington. I am always in awe of their beauty.

Our first stop was Slide Waters. This park was packed and we couldn’t even find a parking space. Water slides are always a popular attraction for families, especially the last couple of weekends of summer before the kids head back to school. I did manage to snag a photo through the car window as we drove through the parking lot.

We then drove through the downtown area and sought out a less crowded beach area. We were surrounded by other beachgoers who brought their own food and even barbecues, chairs and tables. Beyond the buoys, a variety of boats cruised by and there were parasailors in the air.

The beach at Lake Chelan was a lovely way to spend a relaxing Saturday afternoon.
