I slept in this morning. My first cup of coffee was at eleven. Breakfast was pasta alfredo at about 1 pm. It’s humpday and it’s one of those days.

Today I read a blog post written by a friend in Missouri. It began by mentioning memoirs, evolved into family life, and from there went on to a craft project. Despite the fact that the rain exacerbates her knee and back pain, she always plows her way through to finding something positive. You are an inspiration to all of us, Ty. Thank you.

Sea snakes are harassing beachgoers in Puerto Vallarta. These poisonous creatures are dangerous. It used to be just the tides we had to watch out for. And I guess we can throw the jellyfish in with that too. I detest snakes so won’t be going to Puerto Vallarta anytime soon.

Time to embarrass one of my kids. My daughter just competed in the CPU Nationals (Canadian Powerlifting) and qualified for Internationals. She is off to Panama in October to compete. It’s exciting that I get to watch her live online. It’s almost like being there.

I found a great dentist here in Aguascalientes. His office is only a five minute walk from my house. A visit to the dentist isn’t one of my favorite pastimes, but he was excellent and I actually felt quite relaxed. I’ve even forgiven him for the white diet he put me on after the whitening process.

I won’t comment on Trump’s speech last night. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I’m not interested in sparring with friends who are staunch Democrats and friends who are staunch Republicans. We’ll just have to wait and see how everything turns out.

I just signed up for a virtual program with NCW Libraries. This one is being presented as a part of Women’s History Month and deals with homelessness.

I’ve started to think about returning to Washington in May but, as usual, am procrastinating the arduous task of booking flights.

Avocados and Audiobooks

And I thought January was the month from hell. But it has now extended into February. World War III has begun with tariffs and retaliatory tariffs. A convicted felon can be president of a country but immigrants with offences as minor as traffic violations are still being deported. And a jet catches fire on the runway before takeoff. Thankfully all passengers were evacuated safely.

But back to avocados and audiobooks.

I limit my intake of bread here in Mexico as the sugar content is way too high. This morning as I tuned in to my online church service I realized that I would have to substitute something for bread as we were doing communion. I reached for a slice of avocado. I found my mind wandering to the price of avocados now that all these tariffs have been implemented. They were expensive enough last summer when I was in Washington. I wonder how expensive they will be this year. Will guacamole still be as popular?

These tariffs are ugly. How can people eat healthy foods when they almost have to mortgage their homes in order to afford to buy fresh fruits and vegetables? Sorry but I do not sympathize when it comes to the imported alcohol. As far as the fentanyl goes, we’ll just have to wait and see.

On to the audiobooks. I belong to a book club in East Wenatchee. While I can’t attend the meetings in person while I’m in Mexico, I am able to access the books through the North Central Washington library system. Sometimes I read the books but lately I have resorted to the audiobooks. Staring at a computer screen does not have the same comforting feel as holding a book in my hands. By listening to a book, it leaves my hands free to color, one of my favorite pastimes when it comes to relaxing.

I think it’s time for some humor, as corny as it may be.

Why can’t you trust atoms? Because they make up everything.

Let’s Move On

Let’s Move On

The Taylor Bowl should have ended on Sunday. But it’s Thursday and it’s still going on. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got more media coverage than the game. The 49ers came on strong, screwed up and blew it. Done, finished, over with. Don’t dwell on it.

And now for the weather. Are we back in December here? 50s instead of 80s? Rain? And it’s not even the rainy season. Enough already. Bring back the normal sunny warm weather to Aguascalientes. Friends in Guadalajara and Mazatlan and several other places in Mexico are complaining as well.

Alaska, my favorite airline, please have a little more respect for your flight attendants. Resolve this issue before it’s time for my return flight up north in April. Disgruntled employees are not in your best interests. Neither are dissatisfied customers.

Okay people. I’ve ranted enough for one day. Now for something more positive.

We’ve had iffy weather and along with it comes iffy internet. The Wi-Fi actually was only out for a few hours on Tuesday and I was able to catch the last twenty minutes of my Bible Study on Zoom. And in the evening I attended another Zoom session with NCW Library where we discussed conflict in terms of escalation and de-escalation. Tonight the topic is compassionate communication and that should be an interesting one.

Off to do some shopping and practice my Spanish.

The pandemic has subsided but I still find myself taking courses and attending workshops via Zoom. The month of February is a busy one.

This past week I began attending programs sponsored by the North Central Washington Libraries. The first topic was Learn to Listen-Listen to Learn. It was a good review of listening techniques that I studied decades ago when I was going for my counseling certification. And it reinforced the idea of acknowledging and validating the feelings of others.

The second topic was Conflict. Definitions as well as characteristics of conflict were discussed. Five different styles of responding to conflict were explored focusing on relationship and our own agenda. A link was provided to assess our own individual style as well.

On both evenings we were able to go into smaller breakout rooms and ponder the above topics. It was a great experience and I’m looking forward to the remaining four evenings coming up in the next couple of weeks.

Another Zoom experience this week was for writers. The topic was The Art of Writing Immersive Worlds. The speaker was Cat Rambo, a Nebula award winning author of science fiction and fantasy. Material covered here included techniques and tools for making a reader feel totally immersed in the world of our characters.

Another Zoom group I do regularly is a Bible Study with my life group back in Wenatchee. We are currently studying John, one of my favorite books.

In Three Weeks

In Three Weeks

Another week has flown by. As I’ve been adding things to the calendar I noticed that three weeks from today I’ll be back in East Wenatchee. This past week I finished a five week bible study. Five weeks has gone by? We just started! And I started a new discussion group with the Ripple Foundation in Leavenworth. I also got a notice about an upcoming SAIL activity in Wenatchee. Winter is definitely coming to a close.

As I look around my room, I see that I still have some organizing to do before I’m ready to leave. The countdown is on and the last days before I leave go by all too quickly. I hear you people. The snow is mainly up in the mountains and not in the town. But it isn’t the 85 degree weather I’ve grown accustomed to here. At least all my warmer clothes are waiting for me when I get back to Washington.

I had a delightful lunch with Alethia and Raul yesterday. Alethia made the most delicious pozole, one of my favorite Mexican dishes. She sent me a video, in Spanish, and I’m going to attempt to prepare this when I’m in Washington. Hopefully I’ll be able to find the ingredients.

Mysteries? I just registered for a program offered by NCW Libraries. It’s called A Nicer Kind Of Murder: The Evolution Of Crime Fiction. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? I’ll be doing it online but can’t wait to get back and go to some programs in person. I’ve heard some great speakers and done some fun crafts in the past and am looking forward to doing more. NCW has a wonderful variety of programs for adults as well as kids.

My TV remote doesn’t always recognize my gringa accent so I’m back to manually selecting channels. I even got Alexa to talk in Spanish to it but the remote didn’t like her accent either. Sigh………………….

Countdown

Please tell me another week has not gone by already. I need to start thinking about packing.

Facebook reminded me that on June 17th in 2013 I was having surgery in Winnipeg. Glad it’s now 2022 and I was leading the exercises in fitness training this year instead on June 17th. Even Walmart didn’t annoy me on Friday.

On my commute by bus to Leavenworth to teach SAIL classes on Thursday, I met an activities director of a personal care home. She noticed the shirt I was wearing and asked if I’d consider teaching at their facility. I told her I’d touch base in August when I get back from Canada. I still have more training to do so that I can coach A Matter of Balance.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever envision myself teaching fitness classes at this stage of the game. Add it to more stories to tell my grandkids.

Writing is going well. Actually it’s going so well that I haven’t found time to catch up on reading books in English, usually a favorite pastime when I come up from Mexico every spring. I do go to the library, but it’s mostly to print out documents.

I’ve also given Duolingo a rest. I received an email the other day telling me how sad Duo is because I haven’t been checking in every day. Poor little owl!

I met a guy the other day who is up here from Florida to be in Leavenworth Summer Theater. So happy to hear that I won’t miss all of them when I’m in Canada. My favorite is still Sound of Music. The surrounding woods and the mountains are the most amazing backdrops.

I’m glad it’s Wednesday. I’m not too anxious to relive yesterday. It was a little on the stressful side. And it’s behind me now.

This morning I’m headed to the YMCA for the first class of A Matter of Balance. I’m really looking forward to it. The older I get, the more important fitness becomes.

Walmart is on the horizon for this afternoon. I’ve successfully avoided it for a while so I guess I’m due.

Tonight is another Zoom class sponsored by the library. Wednesday nights have been a series of interesting programs dealing with health issues.

Here And There

Here And There

I’m sitting here sipping salted caramel tea as I write this. A nice change from the chamomile I drink in Aguascalientes. In the background The Rifleman fills the TV screen. I loved that show as a child and I still do. Not on any of the channels I watch in Mexico.

I enjoy my life where I’ve turned back into a snowbird. When I first arrived in Culiacan I met expats who had decided to revert back to the snowbird life. I didn’t understand it back then, but after living full time in Mexico for almost six years, I made that decision as well.

That was back in 2016 when I retired from teaching ESL. That was also when I discovered Washington state. My planned two week vacation turned into four months when the first snowfall finally chased me back to Mazatlan.

As I was eating a sourdough English muffin with marble cheese for breakfast, I found myself missing gorditas. Yes, that happens. The only Mexican food I eat up here is at Agave Azul in Cashmere. But marble cheese does not exist in Mexico.

I had lunch at Gustav’s with friends the other day. One of my rare red meat fixes. Although the burger was far superior, I found myself missing the country music at Country Break in Aguascalientes.

The mountains here in Washington never cease to amaze me. I see them out my bedroom window. I see them when I go out for walks. The view is magnificent on the drive from East Wenatchee along Highway 2 into Leavenworth.

The NCW Libraries features an abundance of programs and activities in addition to books and movies. I signed up for two of them this month that are offered on Zoom.

The museum in Wenatchee is another of my favorite places. The Martin Luther King Jr. Multicultural Fest is one of the featured events. There is also an art show going on with displays of art from local schools. I will have to check out what programs they are offering this month.

Yesterday Christina and I went out to garage sales and had a blast. We found lots of treasures. Brought back memories of another lifetime in Canada.
